ATV Helmet Considerations

Four-wheelers are more stable than dirt bikes and allow riders to drive much faster. Since you’ll be moving quicker on a heavier vehicle, standard motocross helmets aren’t ideal. In this guide, we discuss the fifteen best ATV helmets at every price point. We’ve factored in safety, durability, looks, comfort, weight, and more to help you make the best purchase decision.

1. Bell Moto-9 MIPS ATV Helmet

4.7 Stars | 5 Rider Reviews

Red blue and black Bell Moto-9 MIPS ATV Helmet

A strong competitor to the AX-9 is Bell’s Moto-9 MIPS ATV Helmet. Both products have a similar price tag and offer maximum protection. However, there are a few qualities of the Moto-9 that make it stand out.

One of them is Bell’s impressive five-year warranty included with every purchase. This warranty is the most extended and most generous in the industry. It is one way Bell has built an excellent reputation. Satisfied customers have vouched for the quality of the Moto-9. It has yet to receive a rating of fewer than 5 Stars on Amazon.

Another great feature is the MIPS energy management system. This technology was brought over from the biking industry and is revolutionary in its protection capabilities. Regular helmets are only good at protecting you from direct impact, but MIPS covers it all. You’re protected from all angles, from rotational forces, and will be more likely to walk away from an intense crash.

Aside from the protection, the Bell Moto-9 boasts an extensive list of unique features. It comes with magnetic cheek pads, X-Static Liner, Velocity Flow Ventilation, Flying Bridge Visor, and Tri-Matric Shell. Many of these qualities add to the helmet’s lightweight design and cooling capabilities.

The vents are fully adjustable, and the Moto-9 even has a Magnefusion Emergency Removal System. There’s no doubt that the Moto-9 is the pinnacle of ATV Helmet technology. From protection to comfort, this is a well-rounded product.

2. 1Storm Off-Road ATV Helmet

4.5 Stars | 3,208 Rider Reviews

1Storm Off-Road ATV Helmet black and white color

The 1Storm Off-Road ATV Helmet is an advanced and versatile helmet that won’t break the bank. It has two visor options that make it flexible and suited for both day and night riding. An aggressive design makes it look super cool, and nearly everyone owning a 1Storm ATV Helmet has said it fits very well.

There are eight color options available and five different sizes to choose from. One of the most advanced features it boasts is heightened ventilation. Eleven vent ports are engineered to keep your head as cool as possible in all conditions. There are five in the front, four in the back, and two along the shell’s top.

From our experience, you get the most airflow through the primary chin vent. The most considerable drawback to the 1Storm Off-Road Helmet is that the vents don’t open and close, so there aren’t as many adjustment options. Most ATV riders keep their vents open at all times. Still, if you want ventilation customization, this is important to consider.

All of 1Strom’s components are high-quality and sturdy. You’ll have adequate protection from hard crashes or rollovers; just don’t push yourself into hazardous situations.

3. AGV AX-9 Helmet

AGV AX-9 Helmet

Serious riders require more advanced equipment. If you’re looking for a helmet that meets “extreme standards,” the AGV AX-9 Helmet is a fantastic product. AGV is a legendary action sports brand that’s loved by professionals around the world. Every risk-taker and adrenaline seeker should strongly consider investing in protective equipment designed to protect against hard impacts.

AGV has been producing some of the world’s finest helmets since 1947. They’ve had plenty of years to refine their designs and offer premier concussion and brain damage protection. Strength comes from carbon fiber construction; the same material supercars are made from. No wonder it has such a high price tag.

The AGV engineers combined two shells with a four-density EPS structure. The build provides double the amount of protection most helmets offer. A ventilation system is built into the design and features two rear extractors and three large vents in the front.

This helmet is a comfortable, safe, ventilated helmet that doesn’t have any negative qualities. If this product is within your budget, do yourself a favor and invest in the security that could wind up saving your life.

4. MMG 27V Off-Road ATV Helmet

4.6 Stars | 625 Rider Reviews

Black MMG 27V Off-Road ATV Helmet

If your budget doesn’t allow for MIPS technology, you can still be safe with the right equipment. The MMG 27V Off-Road ATV Helmet is an excellent example of an affordable ATV helmet with great styling, ample protection, and a comfortable design.

This helmet has an adjustable and transparent visor. Ridges built into the helmet shell hold the bill in place at any level you desire. The 27V is a versatile helmet that works on the street and off-road. MMG paid particular attention to ATV riders and added a wide opening to fit any size of goggles.

The liner padding is removable and washable, which is a must-have for advanced and sweaty riders. There’s plenty of airflow from the several vents. However, it’s not the premium ventilation you get from a high-end ATV Helmet.

5. O'Neal 2 Series Slick Helmet

4.7 Stars | 1,269 Rider Reviews

Black O'Neal 2 Series Slick Helmet

There’s a reason that O’Neal has become a household name in the ATV community. They offer an insane amount of quality for the money and make great equipment that everyone can afford. The O’Neal 2 Series Slick Helmet costs a third of what comparable helmets cost and has become extremely popular for this reason.

Constructed from a lightweight ABS shell, you won’t have to worry about your neck hurting after a long day of riding. Professional racing helmets inspired the styling, and this includes their sleek and low-profile design. It’s also good that O’neal clear coated their graphics to ensure that the intricate paintwork is as durable as possible.

It’s undoubtedly comfortable as well. There’s an ultra-plush padded liner on the interior that can be removed for washing and then reinstalled. Multiple air vents surround the shell that adds to the great styling and cools down the rider.

O’Neal is known for its safety-focused products. There aren’t any gaps in the foam like cheaper helmets sometimes have. The 2 Series provides a few additional safety features. These include a rubber roost nose guard, Double-D release chin strap, and height-adjustable visor, to name a few.

Overall, outstanding quality from O’Neal. All of us at Best Helmets Guide are thoroughly impressed. The O’Neal 2 Series passed our performance tests with flying colors.

6. O'Neal 5SRS Adult ATV Helmet

4.9 Stars | 24 Rider Reviews

O'Neal 5SRS Adult ATV Helmet

It’s always impressive when one brand receives multiple mentions in our top charts. The O’Neal 5SRS Adult ATV Helmet is a slightly more expensive model, but not by much. The 5SRS is another product that has only received 5 Star reviews on Amazon from plenty of satisfied customers. Three color options are available, and six size options mean there’s something that works for everybody.

We love the elegant graphics, and O’Neal does a great job coating them, so they never fade and last a long time. The central portion of the helmet is constructed out of a lightweight ABS shell. This material is even more protective and lighter than the competition.

The 5 Series line has better cooling technology than the 2 Series. O’Neal pairs multiple air vents with a Coolmax liner to ensure you stay dry no matter the conditions. If you frequently ride during hot summer days, this can be a huge relief that’s worth the extra money.

It meets and exceeds DOT, ECE, and AS/NZS safety standards. Even if you happen to roll your ATV onto your head, have confidence knowing you’ll be protected from the worst.

7. Fly Racing Formula CC Helmet

4.8 Stars | 22 Rider Reviews

Blue Fly Racing Formula CC Helmet

The Fly Racing Formula CC Helmet is a professional-grade beast. If you want to flex on your buddies with gorgeous styling and a carbon fiber build, this is the one for you. Four different colors and six sizes are available for the Formula CC. Even if this helmet is out of your budget with its astronomically high price tag, we recommend checking it out. Every ATV enthusiast will appreciate the bold stance, craftsmanship, and aggressive styling. Check out Fly Racing’s Amazon listing above.

It contains all the same essential elements the industry-leading Formula Carbon model has. Fly Racing said it correctly; this is “the absolute in total head protection.” To back up the safety claims, all Fly Racing Helmets are DOT Certified and comply with the Department of Transportation's requirements.

8. O'Neal 3 Series Off-Road Helmet

4.8 Stars | 88 Rider Reviews

Black O'Neal 3 Series Off-Road Helmet

If you’re surprised to see O’Neal featured again on this list, then you probably haven’t been following along. Jim O’Neal Distributing was created by the man himself in 1970 when he realized the potential of off-road racing. He saw how dangerous the sport was and took the initiative to design and create better apparel and protective equipment for dirt biking and ATV riding.

The O’Neal 3 Series is a fantastic off-road helmet with a price tag between the 3 and 5 series models. Its shell is constructed from durable Polycarbonate, and altogether the unit only weighs 1500 grams. Two colors of the helmet are available, and there are six size options to allow for the perfect fit.

Like the 5 Series, the 3 Series wicks moisture away from your hair and scalp. An ultra-plush washable and removable padded liner keeps you cool and dry no matter the circumstances.

This helmet has an adjustable visor built-in and sufficient intake and exhaust vents. O’neal clear coats all their helmets to make sure the decals hold fast for a long time. To back up the protective capability claims, the 3 Series was submitted for certification and quickly passed the DOT, ECE, and AS-NZS safety standards.

9. LS2 Subverter ATV Helmet

4.6 Stars | 465 Rider Reviews

White LS2 Subverter ATV Helmet

Currently, the LS2 Subverter ATV Helmet is on sale and costs less than 45% of what it usually does. It’s been just over a year since we’ve seen an opportunity to get a high-end helmet at a mid-range price.

We’re certainly not just excited about the discount. The LS2 MX470 Subverter Full-Face Helmet is fantastic. This product was initially a game-changer in the world of high-performance MX helmets and gained popularity as an ultra-safe ATV helmet.

There are fourteen great colors and patterns available and an impressive collection of 8 sizes offered. The more helmet sizes made for a model, the more accurate sizing and fit you can get. We won’t discuss all the features this helmet has to offer, but we will cover some crucial qualities. For more information, refer to the product description using the button above.

The LS2 MX470 has a record-breaking count of 35 separate ventilation ports, deep channels for engineered airflow, and LS2’s thermo-weld system. One of the more impressive design feats is that the construction uses almost no glue whatsoever, reducing weight and improving durability.

Crash forces are absorbed through dual-density EPS in-molding technology. This high-tech layer works much like a person’s scalp, diminishing rotational energy, and dramatically improving energy dissipation. Surprising as it is, LS2 created protection technology that’s on par with MIPS systems. It’s debatable whether it’s safer than MIPS, but these two designs are indeed very similar.

10. Fox Racing Gama V1 Helmet

4.9 Stars | 51 Rider Reviews

Fox Racing Gama V1 Full-face Helmet

A top list of ATV helmets certainly wouldn’t be complete without a helmet from Fox. They’re likely the most popular and influential motorsport brand in the entire world. The clear standout in the brand’s product line is the Fox Racing Gama V1 Helmet. It doesn’t cost all that much, and it has wicked cool styling. Dozens of satisfied customers have given it positive remarks, which created the helmet’s near-perfect Amazon ratings.

Multiple models are designed uniquely for men’s and women’s head shapes. We’d love to report that all the styles are of the same quality, but sadly we cannot. The men’s model is well designed, but the women’s product lacks attention to detail. We recommend that women stay away from this helmet as there are better alternatives on the market.

The Gama V1 has a removable and washable comfort liner that’s super simple to adjust and operate. You’ll stay at a consistent temperature regardless of how much exercise you get due to the nine intake vents and four exhaust ports. We’ve found this majority intake vent design to be handy since it pulls in more cool air, forcing hot air out quickly. This suction effect results in a ton of consistent airflow.

An MVRS (Magnetic Visor Release System) is integrated, which lets the visor fall from the helmet when you crash. MVRS is a safety feature that keeps the brim from shattering into your face and eyes. At the helmet’s core, ABS shell construction and injection molded polycarbonate keep your head and brain well protected.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with the Fox Racing Gama V1. It fits perfectly, is super comfortable, and offers incredible value for the money.

11. WOW Kids ATV Helmet

4.8 Stars | 41 Rider Reviews

WOW Kids ATV Helmet with black spiderweb pattern

While young children don’t commonly ride ATVs, there are some smaller models with 50cc to 150cc motors designed for youth riders. To accommodate this, we’ve tested brands and found the best child protective equipment. The WOW Kids ATV Helmet is affordable, heavily cushioned, aerodynamic, ultra-protective, and stylish.

This helmet is available in ten different color options and three sizes. Some of the patterns are basic colors, while others feature superhero and movie character designs. WOW added some performance features to this kid’s helmet. It was developed with a wind tunnel to advance aerodynamics. This shape significantly reduces the wind noise, and resistance force and keeps your child stable and enjoying their helmet. It’s super important to get kids enthusiastic about wearing helmets early on and build safe habits.

The interior is heavily cushioned and super comfortable. Not only does this make the riding experience better, but it adds a secondary layer of head protection. Pads and liners are all removable and washable to ensure the helmet stays sanitary and odor-free.

Safety is the number one priority, especially for our children. The WOW Kids ATV Helmet features multi-density EPS materials and a thick ABS shell. These impact-resistant materials meet and exceed DOT standards and are the same materials that professional helmets utilize.

12. ILM Adult ATV Helmet

4.6 Stars | 2,572 Rider Reviews

Black ILM Adult ATV Helmet

ILM is a brand that’s been steadily gaining popularity. A few years ago, nobody knew who they were, but now they’re a force to be reckoned with. We were shocked to review the ILM Adult ATV Helmet and find excellent qualities for such a low price.

The benefit of this helmet that stands out comes from the sleek aerodynamic design. It costs 3x less than most other helmets, but it sure does allow you to pick up speed. There are ventilation ports in the front and rear that offer a respectable amount of airflow and cooling.

To be clear, this helmet doesn’t have the quality of more expensive models. However, it’s not fair to compare the two when this one costs far less. It’s a fantastic product with a detachable visor, lightweight ABS material, and aerodynamic flow design.

For the beginner to intermediate rider, this helmet has enough protection and performance. It either meets or exceeds all of the DOT’s safety standards and is a reliable product. You may look to upgrade in the future, but if you’re shopping for your first ATV helmet, this is an excellent option.

13. GDM DK-650 ATV Helmet

4.8 Stars | 10 Rider Reviews

GDM DK-650 ATV Helmet with visor

A step-up in quality from a beginner helmet is the GDM DK-650 ATV Helmet. Many people like the fit and affordability of this helmet, and it has some cool design options as well. You can pair the six helmet colors with different visors and select your size from six options.

Many premium features are built-in. Where the DK-650 stands out is in its visor design. The face shield is coverless, has a flush-fit design, is compound-curved, scratch-resistant, and has chemicals that protect against harsh UV rays. With all these qualities combined, GDM’s visor is better than those on some +$300 helmets.

Overall, it has a wicked cool design and plenty of performance features. There are five points of ventilation positioned all around the outer shell. You’ll find vents on the chin, rear, and up above the visor. We also love the Double D-Ring chin strap, which is comfortable and quality-built.

Each helmet comes with two removable visors for fun customization. The GDM Dk-650 is DOT approved for dual sport use, making it safe to use in various situations.

14. Shoei Hornet X2 Helmet

4.8 Stars | 10 Rider Reviews

Shoei Hornet X2 grey multi-sport helmet with visor

If you thought helmets couldn’t get more expensive than Fly Racing’s model, you’d be surprised. Shoei makes a model they call the Hornet X2 Helmet that will cost you an arm and a leg but leave you very well protected.

The first thing you’re likely to notice is that it has a different style from traditional ATV helmets. It’s a crossed design between an off-road helmet and a premium road helmet. This helmet was made for ATV and biking enthusiasts to give them a dual-sport option. If you plan on going on trips that involve street and trail riding, this will protect you through both.

We can only describe the Hornet X2 as a true all-element, all-road helmet. Incredibly, Shoei was able to pull this off because balancing the design qualities was sure to be no easy task.

An example of a dual-sport component is the chin bar. The unique shape improves ventilation performance and air intake. The tricky part was designing the X2 also to accommodate heavy breathing during demanding off-road riding. Shoei’s solution was to enable the rider to effortlessly adjust and fine-tune the ventilation system to their riding conditions.

15. Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS Dirt Helmet

4.7 Stars | 69 Rider Reviews

Black Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS Dirt Helmet with visor

We’re ending on a high note by reviewing the Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS Dirt Helmet. Versatility is where this helmet stands out the most, as you can take it from the street to rough singletrack with ease. This helmet is offered in six different sizes, allowing the rider to select a correctly fitted helmet.

Don’t mistake the MX-9 Adventure MIPS for the standard model. This one has a longer list of features, including an anti-scratch and anti-fog shield. A difference between the Adventure model is that the shield flips up, and there’s more goggle space underneath. Of course, the guard is removable, and you can even remove the visor “for a stealth street look.”

The most important feature is protection. This helmet utilizes the MIPS energy management system, which is expensive but far safer. If you’re serious about ATV riding and you frequently find yourself in dangerous situations, it’s worth the money. You can’t put a price on the safety of your brain because it doesn’t heal like the rest of your body.

As we discussed earlier, Bell’s helmets include an industry-leading five-year warranty. You won’t find another brand that shows this much confidence in its gear’s quality and capabilities.
